Celebration of Earth Day, April 22, 2010

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22 to spread the message of environmental conservation. J&K State Pollution Control Board, Regional Directorate Kashmir, in association with Indian Youth Climate Network celebrated Earth Day 2010 by organising a debate competition among students of eco-clubs.

At least 400 students from different schools participated in the function.

Chief Conservator Forests, Kashmir who was the chief guest, on the occasion, stressed the need for ecological conservation particularly in the light of climatic change and global warming.


            Regional Director SPCB, Kashmir, Mr. S.F.A. Gillani highlighted the role and  of the board and said the J&K Government besides building infrastructure and launching massive awareness for the benefit of the public, has given top priority to the protection of conservation of the forests, water bodies, wildlife and the beautiful landscape of the state. Several numbers of legislations and regulations have been put in place to protect the environment. Mr. Gillani underscored the need for using greener technologies in our day to day life.

            Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Mr. Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo also spoke on the occasion and urged the students to be the ambassadors of green generation and spread the message of environmental awareness.

            Messages from State Governor, Mr. N.N. Vohra, Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah and Minister for Forests, Mr. Mian Altaf Ahmad and Director Information, Khawaja Farooq Ahmad Renzu were read and distributed on the occasion.

            An animated documentary was also presented.            Later, winners of the debate competition were awarded.
